The Planets

Kirklees Orchestral Series

Thursday 30 November 2023

This event has passed.

Bernstein was commissioned to compose the Chichester Psalms for a choral festival, with a specific request for a hint of West Side Story. They combine Biblical Hebrew verse with the Christian choral tradition, wrapping a plea for peace in the Holy Land in ‘the most accessible piece I’ve ever written’.

Ready for take-off? Holst’s celestial masterpiece The Planets inspired soundtracks from Star Wars to Shrek. Each movement is dedicated to the mythical character of its corresponding planet. Expect pulsing rhythms from Mars, the Bringer of War, and glorious melodies from Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity.

An evening of big ensembles, pounding rhythms and unforgettable tunes, this concert is perfect for first-timers!
