Children will be able to get their first taste of opera this summer with Opera North’s new family show, The Mini Magic Flute.
Inspired by one of Mozart’s best-loved operas, The Mini Magic Flute opens on Sunday 5 August at the CBBC Summer Social in Liverpool’s Croxteth Country Park. Designed for 6-12 year-olds, the festival is the BBC’s largest ever for children and brings together a host of CBBC and CBeebies favourites, alongside international music artists, and sporting, crafty and cultural activities.
The Mini Magic Flute packs fun, fantasy and enchanting music into half an hour, making it the perfect introduction to opera for all ages. Performed by three opera singers and an accordionist, it has been written by John Savournin who sang Leprello in the Company’s recent production of Don Giovanni and who devised Opera North’s popular Whistle Stop productions. The latest show is an interactive retelling of Mozart’s magical fairy tale, The Magic Flute, where nothing is quite as it seems. A Prince is in search of a Princess, but will they ever find each other? What adventures lie in wait for them along the way?
A series of informal family singing workshops will also run throughout the day. Led by Opera North vocal delivery artist, Matt Roughley, they will feature some of Mozart’s famous tunes and the weird and wonderful characters who people The Magic Flute.
There will be more opportunities to see The Mini Magic Flute in 2019 when it tours alongside Opera North’s new production of The Magic Flute which opens in Leeds in January.
