We’re delighted to announce rescheduled dates this summer for A Little Night Music, our co-production with Leeds Playhouse which was postponed last year due to the pandemic.
Bringing together operatic luminaries, musical theatre talent and Opera North’s gifted Chorus, the new production of Stephen Sondheim’s musical will run at Leeds Playhouse from 26 June – 17 July 2021.
Leeds Playhouse’s Artistic Director James Brining returns to direct, following his work on our celebrated 2016 co-production of Sondheim’s Into the Woods, a kaleidoscopic Magic Flute for Opera North in 2019, and our BBC Lights Up co-commission Orpheus in the Record Shop this year.
Soprano Stephanie Corley and Dutch baritone Quirijn de Lang – last seen together as Fred and Lilli in Opera North’s Kiss Me, Kate – return in the roles of Desiree Armfeldt and Frederik Egerman, the former lovers whose chance meeting sparks a game of romantic musical chairs. An Opera North favourite of even longer standing, the legendary Dame Josephine Barstow casts a sardonic eye over proceedings as Madam Armfeldt, after her standout performance in Sondheim’s Follies at the National Theatre.
Other roles are taken by the stars of Into the Woods, our talented Chorus: Amy J Payne is the maidservant Petra and Christopher Nairne and Helen Évora take on the roles of Count and Countess Malcolm. As the callow Henrik Egerman and his father’s ingénue bride Anne Egerman, young tenor Laurence Kilsby and Australian/American soprano Corinne Cowling make their Opera North debuts.
A specialist in American musical theatre whose Opera North credits include Carousel, Sweeney Todd, Kiss Me Kate, Into the Woods and last year’s Street Scene, our former Head of Music James Holmes conducts; and designer Madeleine Boyd (Don Giovanni, The Turn of the Screw and La Traviata) has Sondheim’s country house setting teetering between decadence and decay.
