Audio-Described Performances

Audio-described performances include a live description of the visual elements of the production delivered through a discreet headset. This information is minimal and carefully timed so that it does not detract from the music.

Opera North’s audio-described performances include a pre-show touch tour where blind and visually impaired audience members are allowed access to the stage to touch/get a closer look at the sets and costumes. Places for the touch tour are free but must be booked in advance.

In addition to this, an introduction to the visual aspects of the production is sent to all bookers one week prior to the show as an MP3 or CD (please specify at the time of booking). This information is repeated through the headsets 15 minutes before the start of the performance. Large print casts lists are also available on the night, and in braille on request in advance.

Customers booking for the audio description may be eligible for discounts in some venues so please contact the box office in your chosen venue.  You can also then book on the touch tour and reserve a headset.

Peter and The Wolf & The Snowman

Leeds Town Hall Sunday 22 December 2.30pm

An enchanting double bill of family favourites, full of old-fashioned magic. Join us for an audio described and relaxed performance of Prokofiev’s Peter and The Wolf  with Narrator Pui Fan Lee and the Raymond Briggs classic, The Snowman, with the iconic score performed live by a full symphony orchestra, and the unforgettable ‘Walking in the Air’, sung live by a member of Opera North’s Youth Chorus.

We are offering live audio description for The Snowman. This will be available via the MobileConnect app on your phone.  Just download the Sennheiser MobileConnect app ahead of coming to Leeds Town Hall, and then find the MobileConnect wifi network on entering the auditorium, and click on ‘Audio Description’. Ask any member of the front of house staff for help if you require it.  And if you do not have a smartphone, or have any questions, do get in touch with us at or call us on 0113 2233629.

This performance will also include measures such as reducing lighting and noise contrasts in the show, keeping the house lights on low and having a relaxed approach to people leaving and returning to the auditorium. Please note this showing will have no interval.
