The Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw describes her work Entr’acte as taking people ‘through Alice’s looking glass’.
This programme certainly feels otherworldly with Shaw’s mesmerising exploration of unexpected harmonies and textures followed by Brahm’s ‘Sextet in G Major’, famously described as ‘ethereal’ by the British musicologist Sir Donald Tovey.
This is perfect lunchtime listening for people who enjoy hearing innovative contemporary works alongside more classic compositions – and for those who simply want to take time out of their day and be transported to another world.
