Opera North Strings Academy

The Opera North Strings Academy is an immersive four days of ensemble training where young string players are tutored by and play alongside string education specialists from Opera North.

This academy focuses on the skills needed for playing in string ensembles. Participants will play exciting repertoire and discover the special relationships between instruments of the string family. Everyone will be appropriately challenged to develop within their technical and musical ability in an inspirational and supportive environment.

Participants will work as part of an ensemble and explore repertoire written for string ensembles, as well as take part in intuitive music and technique workshops. All sessions will provide the opportunity for feedback from professionals and peers alike.

Participants will be placed into a small group of young musicians young musicians and accompanying tutors and pastoral staff with whom they will remain for all sessions.

Each day players will:

  • Explore, rehearse and perform carefully selected repertoire for string ensembles with specialist tutors from Opera North
  • Take part in workshops on specific string techniques
  • Take part in intuitive music workshops
    Play side by side with string tutors from Opera North
  • Meet new people and make new friends

We welcome school aged musicians studying Grade 4-6 or equivalent on their string instrument to take part.

Eligibility
For Violin, Viola, Cello and Double Bass players, studying grade 4 –6 (or equivalent).

Timings
Daily sessions run from 9.30am – 4.30pm

Booking is now closed for the 2022 academy but you can register an interest for future courses.

How to book?

Step 1: Book your place

Book onto the course by following the ‘Book Now’ button above by Monday 18 July. Please note that spaces are limited. We recommend booking early to avoid disappointment.

Step 2: Complete a registration form

You will be sent a full registration form for all emergency, medical and music information to complete. We will then be in touch with a handbook and schedule.

We welcome school aged musicians years studying grade 4-6 (or equivalent) on the Violin, Viola, Cello or Double Bass to take part.

Yes. We want to ensure that costs do not create a barrier to taking part and are able to offer financial assistance to those who wouldn’t be able to join without support. Please get in touch to see if you are eligible for a bursary place.
